PULP BRITAIN, CHANGES

From recent discussions with a my tutor, I have decided to change the original of the map of the british isles. This was the original look. It was said that the map looks too formal for the style of the video.

This is the new style of the original. I had to learning new techniques to get it to look the way i wanted. I wanted it to look like as if the map had been folded up. I have tried to make the map look less formal than the other one. This map seem to be more fitting for the film.

I have decided to this as the main logo for the video and for the part when the website is mentioned.

On the part where the website is concerned and the bit which shows where the store stores are located I wanted to use animations. This would require key framing at an advanced level. This meant that I would have to learn how to do it and to over come my lack of knowledge. I decided to look at some tutorials and see if I can produce animation in Premiere Pro.

PULP SHOOTING DAY 3, MIlton Keynes

I had to cancel on my original date for the Milton Keynes shoot, this was due to the fact that I had a throat infection and felt that traveling from Nottingham to Milton Keynes would be to much to handle. The Date was rescheduled to the 02/03/2010. The day went really well the only real problem was the lighting in the store was a little dull and so I feared that the footage may not fit in the footage from the other stores. After reviewing the footage after capture I had otices that I had set the camera up so that there was no problem with light or white balance (WB) of the shots. I think I have learnt from my mistakes in Manchester with the Iris and WB an now set it up for each location I shoot.

Birmingham, Shooting day 2

The Birmingham was very simple I had problems arranging dates to go to the store as the Manager wanted to be present whilst I was filming and so I had to fit around the Schedule. The store was the smallest store that Pulp have and so this mean that the shooting went really quickly. The store is located in the shopping centre which is located next to the train station with access to the centre through the train station. The shoot only took an hour to do this was because I knew what shots were needed and down to the size of the store.

PRP Artifact 3

Artifact 3

This artifact will be cantered on a usability study of the online services using a group of people from the different age ranges. The participants will ranges from 18 to 50 year olds. The main aim to see how people use these websites, whether they find them easy, what features they find easy to use.

Each Participant will load up a website that provides an online catch up service, They then would need to find a specific program using the search engine. The next test will be to browse the TV schedule to find a program from the prime time slots from the day before. The time spent on each site will be timed. Each participant will be asked to take part in a small interview. The experiment will take place in a quiet room with no distractions. The events will be documented on film with the interview recorded on a Dictaphone.

PRP Artifact part 1

As part of the PRP project it requires that 6 artifact are to be collected, these artifacts consist of collecting data that supports the research collected in the main document. This post will outline the first two Artifacts.

Artifact 1
The first Artefact conducted was an online survey; this was distributed over the Internet using an online survey tool. The sample size was 100 participant ranging from the ages of 15 to 50+. The aim was to see if online TV made it more convenient to view Television.

Artifact 2
To produce a study centred on the experiences of Internet Television viewing. The study will follow the experience of a 45-year-old women who as never viewed or used Internet catch up services.

The Study will last for 4 days in this time they will keep an on going diary of how they have found using catch up services. The study will have three conditions; the first one is that the participant will only watch TV through online catch up and no other means. Second, they will have to produce a dairy with of their time spent viewing online Television. Third, they have to spend two days watching Television programmes online using a Computer, then after that watch it when on a TV using a laptop and a VGA cable.

Diary

Day 1

I have never used the BBC iplayer before so I don’t really understand how it works. I am quite new to the whole internet thing. I managed to watch Eastenders that I missed the other day.

Day 2

I have just realised that on BBC iplayers as a guide that shows what programs have been played that day previous feature. I managed to have a look at the ITV one it completely different to the BBC service.

I finding it quite hard to view things on a computer. I don’t feel comfortable sat at a desk watching TV. I do prefer watching sat on my couch or in bed. I do see the appeal of this but I do fine it hard to navigate through he web pages, this could be due to the fact that I don’t use the Internet that often.

Day 3

I really enjoyed using the laptop being connected to the back of the TV. It was quite simple connecting it up. I have missed watching Television programmes on a Television. I am starting to get a little more confident using the catch up services.

Day 4

I feel a lot more confident now using the catch up services. Using it with the TV makes it more comfortable. It would be good to have it in with my TV so I could always catch up when ever I feel like it with out using the computer, The only problem I had was sometimes I had to wait for the video to load.

PULP Shooting day 1

The day started around 12:30 when I arrived in Manchester, the store was easy to find, this was due to the fact that I lived in Manchester and have worked in the store before. The store was well lit and in some cases became a problem, due to over exposure. This provided a problem when i came to some shots on my list and resulted in the footage not being used. I put this down to lack of experience and decided to work on these for the next shoot which is due to be in Milton keynes. The Day in its self was a big learning process as this was the first time I have shot in those conditions.

For the Advert I had to think about the content to fit in with the time constraints. Sticking to the timing is crucial because in a project in the proffessional world a few seconds can mean going over budget or the ad being rejected that why most adverts normally range from 15-30 seconds. The content is crucial for the advert to be successful it needs to be short but straight to the point. These are the storyboard of the two adverts.

Client Project, "I AM PULP"

Pulp have a tag line "THIS IS PULP" also on the PULP card they give to customers it says "I AM PULP" this is somthing I want to play on in Advert and the Promo. I want to show how people have become a apart of PULP because they shop in the store. I have decide to ask customers in the stores to say i "I AM PULP" There will be a selection process to this, the people used will be from an age ranging from 15-29. In some cases I want to have the words printed on paper and have it stuck to theirs lips. This is how it may look in the final edit.

Client Project, BRANDING

I had to think of a way of showing the brands that PULP stock in a way that was quick and punchy for the Advert so I thought of the idea of having the brand logos being placed on the screen as stickers using a hand placing them down. this will create the look as if the hand is placing the stickers on the screen. To do this I think I would have to use a green screen and then place the footage of the stickers underneath. The issue here is timing of the hand and the stickers so it look smooth. I think i will use this idea in the promo video as well because there is a section that focuses on the brands PULP stock. In the promo it will show a higher focus on the stock because there is more time to play around with. Here is a mock up of how it will look in the videos.

This is a mock up the map that will be used to show where the stores are in the British isles. Because this is a mock up it means it will change due to development of the project. I wan to play with idea of a PULP Britain and how pulp is taking over the country.

For the promotional video and the Advert I want to go with a comic strip theme to both the videos using it as a introduction, in some cases as a purpose for transition between shots. eg here is a piece I have done for a previous project where a comic strip was used. This image and a few others were used in a documentary that i made last year. The Comic strips were used to change from one scene to another acting as a introduction.

The use of mascot of some sort is a great way of people identifying a brand name, for example; Andrex toilet paper uses a Labrador Puppy, which people now relate to as the Andrex puppy. The puppy implies that the toilet paper is soft to the touch just like puppies fur.

Through the Research I have conducted, most companies have short adverts lasting only 20-30 seconds longs, they are straight to the point. An adverts are used to create awareness of the existence of a brand for example the ferrero Rocher advert had the tag line of “you are spoiling really spoiling us” Most people after seeing that advert will relate it to the ferrero Rocher brand.

Another specific brand that uses a well known tag line is Lynx deodorant; “Sprey more, get more” calling it the; “lynx effect”. The adverts feature men spraying the lynx onto themselves as a result in doing so they attract more women so implying to men that using lynx will attract more attention from the opposite sex.

7.20- what am I doing tonight?
Well errrr, each week on fly fm we have a radio show, which we rotated between 4 residences down at rave Trent. It should be me and another lad this evening between 6 till 9pm should be another lad here with me this evening but his tied up with work being 4th year that we are you know. Pressures of the university stuff, but errmmm, each week on the show best to have a variety on fly fm. Many day time shows. Not many specialist evening.

12min .00- to be fair this is the first show I have done this year, so I’ve yet to find out how am going to balance it, but I suppose you got to put work before play at time so you make sure you freed up your time to do what you want do, so obviously this is a hobby of mine.

20 second Ad Production part one

The is the end title screen with the catch line on. I wanted to make it look as if someone has wrote on the CD with marker pen.

This is the opening of the film for my 20 second advert it will simulate a file being downloaded when the file has finished downloading the CD will be ejected from the Computer. This will require me to take a number of different shots with the camera on a tripod to get the right angle. In the editing process I will link the different shots to make it look like a smooth transition from video recording to stop motion. I will be shooting the film part using a DV and the stop motion I will be using a SLR camera with use of 3 point lighting.

The Ad will start at a computer where a CD will be ejected form the CD compartment and then using stop motion technique. The CD will move down the computer and be written on. The CD will then move into a case on a desk. As the CD then case will then move off the desk, each time the CD travels it will multiply by one at every step. The multiplication of the CD is to represent the act of illegal file sharing with each CD being a copy of the original.

The CD will move out the room the Computer is in and then move down a set of stairs. Every other disk will have a printed cover on it with text explaining why illegal downloads should not be done. Eventually the CD and case will make it to a kitchen table where an MP3 player is with the headphone connected to. The CD will the disappear and the screen on the MP3 player will light up showing the with a which on it saying;

“Get the Low-down on the Downloads”

New Idea.

Due to recent issues arising with the original idea for the Simulated project I had to change the idea. This was due to the feasability of the idea.

The reason why the idea as changed from the original proposed 20 second advert is because the idea at first seemed feasible to produce, but when it came to the preproduction and planning I realised that the original idea would not be viable in to the time constraints of the project and that It could take too much time away from other production aspect. One of the main reasons is the process of animation would be too lengthy to produce and getting acceptable result may take time away from other aspect in the post-production. The new idea uses stop motion but it does not require the same animation process. I believe the new idea is feasible within the time that is left. The location is the same. This proposal as the amended sections.

The change had to be made because of my lack of preparation and thinking how long the production would take, from this I have learnt from the mistakes made and for the future projects I will consider the design and the feasibility in more detail.

On2 have the technology to encode video files in a way to allow them to be viewed in high definition this deal could lead the way forward in HD broadcasting on the web. The deal is said to be worth up to £62.7 million.

20 Second Advert Proposal.

The Advert will seek to explain the implications of illegal Downloading and Sharing of files without the written consent of the creator. In the past through years there as been a rise in illegal downloads this as been a result in the development of Broadband Internet. It also has been made easy due to the easy accessibility of Torrent software, which acts as an interface between the torrents site and the torrent file, using the site as a tracker.

The advert will be aimed to advice those who download that it is illegal and there are consequences that could come of their actions. In the 20 seconds the advert will look at the act of downloading and shine a light on it. There are times that downloading is not illegal this is only when the downloader as the permission from the creator. The illegal act of downloading is not centred around Films or Music, it also includes E-books, Software and other copyrighted material.

There is not a set target audience because I would want to reach a wide demographic of people, but the main intended age range would be 15-25 year olds.

Idea

The 20 second advert will include a Mix of video recorded footage and and stop-motion animation. It will be set in a bedroom of a guy who is sat at his computer. The viewer only sees the torso and the desk. I do not want to put the actors face on the advert because I don’t want to put a face to your average downloader; this is because I do not want to imply that only young males download. This is mainly due to the fact that downloading does not have any age limits and that’s anyone any age downloads illegally.

When the person leaves the room the mouse come alive and start a conversation with the computer and a Book on the desk. The mouse will explain what downloading is and how it can be illegal. The book will be the naïve one in the shot and learning from the mouse. At the end of the advert there will be a the catch line;

“Get the Low-down on the Download”

In recent news there as been a high profile case in were a large torrent site creators have been tried in court and convicted to there defence the creators pleaded that their site did not actually host any material but acted as a gateway to the torrents but the court ruled that from the advert on the site they still made money from the site.

We have been asked for our project to produce a 20 second advert for the Copyright Protection Society (CPS). The advert needs to explain the topic of illegal file sharing and when it is not illegal and when it is.

The Brief
“The Copyright Protection Society is starting a public information campaign that
illustrates and explains what file sharing is, when and why it is illegal and also the
consequences of being involved with this illegal activity. They want you to
produce a piece of multimedia that will address the points above. You have six
weeks to complete the task and you are required to produce a short proposal of
your designs and ideas then you will produce the multimedia product.”

This is the poster for my film doll face.I desided to keep it simple. I didnt want ot make the poster look too busy with lots of things going on. I didnt want to give to much about the film away to the audience. SO by only showing half of of the dolls face and a small droplet of blod under the text. After doing the last feedback I had taken into account the suggestion made and then shown the improvements to my seminar group. A few people made suggestions on how certain aspects could be changed. One point was made that the titles where a little too long. Also someone suggested adding lighting effects and music to create tension in the story.

After showing a near full edit to some lecturers the other day, there were a few things they suggested. He said that there was not enough pace to the film and that some of shots could be shortened. Also because there was no voice for the Doll it was hard to get a sense of the story. Also with out the voice I myself could time the shots right so to show a fluid conversation between the two characters. They also suggested a new scene to be added to make the story flow and give the audience of a little more understanding of the character intentions.

I decided to keep the crew quite small because the room we were shooting in was a little small so it would have been a little cramped with lots of people. So I kept it to just 2 people me as the director/cameraman and Danny Peachey on sound and Camera assistant.

Day One 06/03/2009

We started filming around 11 in the morning and filmed until 8pm. The went really well with very few mishaps. Later on there was a problem with one of the lights so we had to replace it before we could carry on so that knocked us back for a an hour. But apart from that we dad managed to get most of the film shot.

Day Two 09/03/2009

The filming went smooth because the scenes we had to shoot were quite simple we stated about 6 and was finished for around half 9. We had to shoot the scene with girl in the bed. The girl who did this was a good sport she didn’t mind having the sheet over her whilst we poured the fake blood onto it. We had a bit of a problem with it seeping through the sheet onto her T-shirt but it came off in the wash.

After packing and going home I realised I needed to some extra footage and some I forgot to shoot so this meant I had to arrange another shooting day. Which wasn’t to bad because I only needed to short that didn’t need any extra lighting.

Day Three 5/5/2009

This day only took around a hour to shoot because I only need on shot which wasn’t to0 bad because I only needed to need any extra lighting.

Day Four 12/05/2009

This was a new scene that a lecturer suggested that I added to the make the story progress and flow a little better. This scene was shot outside which posed a problem. Where to shoot? I didn’t want to shoot where it was busy or somewhere to quiet where there would be a possibility of have the equipment stolen. I decided to shoot on all saints street which I was the location of the film. I picked a very good day for shooting because there was minimal wind and it was a sunny day.

The film we have to produce is to be authored on to a DVD. A so it is obvious to make the most of the space on the DVD. DVD's can fit up 4.7GB of data and my film wont film that space I have decided to include extra features such as Posters, trailers, Artwork and production still. I originally decided to make a short graphic novel telling the story leading up to the moments in the film. But I was advised not to do it, because of it could possible take time away from editing the film. So I chose to do art work. Also on the content we have been to told to produce a press and press release.

Roles of a Director

A Director is a person who directs the making of a Film or Tv show. I feel the role of a director in Film is to take a script, Break it down and visualise the flow of film whilst contrlling the films artistic and dramatic feel of the film whilst constantly guiding the actors and crew in the furfilment of the vision.

Danny Boyle

I Think it is about that Danny Boyle as had some recognition from the America Audience with his latest film Slum dog Millionaire. I am yet to see the film. I have always been a fan of Danny Boyle films. Recently he as been more of an inspiration to become a director and film maker because of his success and the graet films he as Directed. I feel he as made such a different range of films that in my oppinion have been great if not cult classics. I really like how the American film industry wanted the film Slum dog Millionaire to straight to DVD and now it as won 8 Oscars at the most prestigious film awards beating many block buster such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

My all time favorite is Trainspotting I really like the gritty reality off how drug taking can effect life's also the aspect of the surrealism in it to show the effects of the drugs. My particular favorite scene in this film is when Renton as an adverse affect with the heroin he as just taken.

I like this scene on how its shows drug taking as if it an every day thing with no glamour about it as some films portray it. Also the use of the song its a perfect day by Lou reed as it ambiguity in it as well because the son is actually about his own addiction to heroin.

Another work that particular standin out for me is

The Beach

. I particular like the horro flicks 28 days later and 28 weeks later and the way it changes the preconception of whata Zomie actually was. I liked how it gave a reality to the fantasy and the way the films leave you feeling little un easy thinking that a zombie outbreak could happen out your own home.

I feel his film can Please and shock an audience with the gritty reality they show they always hav some aspect of realism allowing an audience to relate to the films in someway or another.

After thinking about the idea for a while I have finally finalised the idea and the script for a my 6 minute fill. I still havent give a title yet but I am thinking about it. The seminars with the directors and the actress where helpful in developing my idea and script. I have now gone on to develop a shot list for each scene. I will later develop these with inframe forge to visualise the film before shooting.

Radiator Festival

Today were asked to do some volunteer work to Document the Radiator festival and edit it into a 5 minute film for them to send out to there sponsors. We have to coverthe different events that take place in and around the city of Nottingham. The filming will take place over a week cover numerous events in the day and the night time. We got hte work from Deborah and the people were are speaking to are Mat Trivett and Miles. I am really excited to start filming these events as they are a good opertunity to network and build contacts and emerse my self in the industry.

We had our presentation yesterday to showcase our work to the AV pathway group. The presentation went well and the people in the AVgroup seemed to like the Documentary. They thought we could have had a shot of Chris in a lecture to show the side of him doing work. We found that we could not meet up becuase he was too busy at the time to meet up again. One of the lecturers said they like the documnetary but they have seen this idea done a few times. Feedback is good to have becuase when you have to do a similiar project we will take into account the feedback.

Ambience Track

Today we shown a Lecturer rough final edit for feeback. He mentioned that we need a ambience track to fill in the dead spaces of sound to keep the audio running smoothly when the Character isnt talking. This was needed when we filmming out side. Also he said we needed to change the shot quicker when we were in the radio studio to make it look faster to fit in with th music.

Plan
Today we would like to finalise editing process and try and cut the footage form 45 minutes down to 10 or under. We to get all the main points of the documentary within the 10 minute then hopefully in the next session try and cut it down to 5 minute.

We have also decided to produce a sort of story board using screen shots so it looks like a comic strip, also for my personnel use I want to turn this in to a short version of the of the documentary making it look like a comic in motion.

The idea for the original documentary was about how homeless people are helped by Volunteer workers to help them get back on their feet. We were hoping to get a Volunteer worker that works to help homeless people.

We managed to get a contact with an organisation called 58i these were a company that dealt with a local soup kitchen. We was close to filming with them but they never got back to me about the filming at the soup kitchen. In addition, at the time we were starting to loose confidence with the idea, we started to hit a bit of a dead end with the idea so we decided to scrap the idea and look for a new idea for our documentary.

Just recently I did some freelance work for a advertising company called EYECORP. This work meant that I had to film there advertisements in and around Manchester airport. They wanted me to produce a 3 minute and 1 minute video showing people interacting with the advertisements. I had to film and edit the whole sequence and make it interesting enough for there sales personnel to use in there presentation pitches to perspective clients. I really enjoyed taking a project on my own and only relying on myself to get the end product I really enjoyed the editing side of the project because it allowed me to be really creative with footage that was really boring to watch if it was unedited.

“The Rise of EBay the rise of the Profiteer”

I bet most people have woke up one morning with the building excitement of hoping to buy tickets to see their favourite band from one of the leading internet ticket seller. To find that they have sold out within 10 minutes of going on sale, your heart sinks knowing that this could be the last chance you could see them. Out of curiosity you look on eBay to see if there could be a few at a reasonable price, to your hearts dismay you find that it is flooded with hundreds of tickets of the venue you wanted and the price as almost double.

I have been in this situation a number of times. These day people just tend to buy tickets for a high profile gig not for the love of the music or that they are a fan but for sheer profit. I find this to be disgusting and selfish. The people who have followed a band, bought all their albums and want to experience them live but find that they cant because people have decided to buy more than they need with the intent of sell them on eBay at an extortionate rate.

I do understand that the seller as the right to this because they have bought the ticket and they own it but it just is not fair on the people who would of paid the original price but not the price they want. I also understand that there are fans that would be willing to pay double the price and these are the people they are targeting.

I just feel the rise of Internet bidding sites as allowed the illegal toting system to be legitimised on the these such sites allowing people to charge what they want. I just think there should be some regulation on this.

“The essential point of networking is human contact. Business has killed networking by making it for the career orientated person”

The original concept of networking was to make human contract with other people whether this was with a neighbor or friends to catch up on the latest gossip. A group of friends is a good example of a network.

I do believe that networking has not been killed by business although now people now see networking as a way to progress their career. Business as driven this trend because most companies give jobs through word of mouth or to people they may already know either personally or through a friend, so this trend as spurred the need to network in the pursuit of career advancement.

I do feel the growing popularity of socially networking sites and the advancement of technology, as taken the original concept of networking and changed it so now that networking can be done over the internet by either through email, instant messaging or though these social networking sites. I personally feel the best way to networking is through personnel contract. Although I have done networking through the internet because of its convenience by giving my C.V to Job networks for perspective employers to view.

Personal experience of this was when I did freelance work over the summer with someone who was a friend of a friends who wanted me to do some filming for them. I think this a good example of networking because the work came from my network of friends. This is a good example but I did for my own career enhancement so then this does show that business as spurred the trend for networking for career advancement because from this I have built a contact within the industry.

I just feel that business has made networking more for the career orientated person but has not killed it because people are always networking in day to day life whether this is meeting new people or just seeing friends for a catch up.

I haven't wrote on this for a while. I had quite a busy summer with being on holiday. I decide to create and online portfolio at the moment its still in the early stages really i haven't really done that much to but its getting there. I need some web space which cost money. I will hopefully have this by the time I go back to university. In the mean time ive been using youtube to show my work off.

Also I have found some freelance work for a company called eyecorp. They specialize in advertising and have offices in the a number of countries. I was asked specially by a family friend who is a sales manager to do the work for the company. He was impressed with work that I have produced previously.

"I thought this was quite interesting how in america that if you acknowledge the owner you can use there work for as long it is not used for a profit. this is the main guidelines of the fair use act.

Ben Dodd is a graduate from Plymouth College of Art & Design. he is an in house direction of a very successful production company and is working on many short film at the moment.I specially like his piece called “SUPRRISE” the film was a one shot movie that was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film noire style and use of one shot which Hitchcock often use. The short film is a surprise for the viewer and the character in the film.

"I was inspired to create Surprise by the brief set from Single Shot, which necessitated the entire film was created using one shot. A Hitchcock inspired film seemed appropriate as many of his films include single takes.

In a month of pleading, charming and building, and with the help of Space City Productions, I managed to put together the production and was able to use 35mm film on a motion control camera.

With the financial support of the Single Shot Scheme, I was able to complete the complex post-production process. The film later went on to premier at Tate Britain and also went on a nationwide tour."

I decided to enter my stop motion animation in to a Competition Called the "Northern Design Competition". I had forgotten about it, until this morning when I checked my emails that I had been Highly commended for the piece. I was not a finalist but I had been a Runner up and that I was considered as a finalist. I was really happy to find a piece of my work had been considered in a competition. Even though I did not win I was still excited to have entered and been considered as a finalist in the competition. Maybe next year I could enter a pice of work and see if could be more successful.

The first website I look was of a local business Called Big Wok. They are a company that runs a few Oriental Buffets. The purpose of their website is to promote the business. The logo for the company is the name over the top of a pan that looks like a wok so the content that is on the website is relevant to the company. On the website there is flash animation that in some places is excessive for example the opening of the site, I think there should be option whether you can skip the animation. There is music on the site that cannot be switch off so if you was on the website for some time you would have to turn the volume down on you computer I found the interactivity to be at its minimum. I feel the website does its purpose but I think the design of the website is poor and maybe it would need to b redeveloped.

This is the website for the new Tower of Terror attraction is Disneyland Paris. The website promotes a made up hotel that the user can take around when they visit the website. The website as a number of language options which gives access to people with from different. I think the reason they have done this because Disney its self is a world wide corporation and can be recognised solely by the logo of either the magical castle or the silhouette of the Mickey Mouse the Mascot of the company. The website as vast interactivity options, there is lot of animation and use of 3D graphics, option s to skip if the user wants to. Also there is music which can be switched off but the text for this is small and in the corner so this implies that the developer does not want the user to turn the sound down, maybe because the there is a person that is from the advert dressed as a hotel attendant that speaks to you and there is a lot of sound affects that add to the experience of visiting the website. It is more of a marketing tool to get people to visit the park. I feel the website is successful in doing what it is set out to do.

It is a vast website incorporating games, film clips and added bonuses in the form of free downloads such as screen savers and wallpapers. The user gets to look in the Book of Spiderwick and gets to use the Seeing stone to find hidden features in the game. I feel the website would benefit people more if they have seen the film than those who have not. The site is very user friendly making it easy for children to use because this is a family film I think the website is quite universal allowing adults and children alike to enjoy. We were set a project called Identity, we had to explore the meaning of our Identity and how we see our self then form this we had to create an avatar that would be placed in a space. We had to consider our Identity the design of the avatar and the space.

The project meant we had to research what an avatar was to gain an understanding of what we had to do and how we would design the avatar. I thought the best way to gain a understanding of “who I am” so I started by do a mind map this help me to get all the different traits of my personality down I help then to gain a direction of where I wanted to take the project. So to help I did a mood board so I could visualise my mind map giving me a good direction on what to do. For the avatar design I started to draw myself and then develop those drawing an illustrated avatar. I came up with the design of a monkey wearing a green T-shirt listening to music. This is to represent that my nickname to my friends is monkey, green is one of y favourite colours and I really like listening to music. I feel a monkey is the best way to describe my identity.

The area, I decided to have it a city with a huge tree over looking and have my Avatar sitting on a branch looking down at the city. The idea developed because as a person I like to be surrounded by people and be busy in a busy environment. So the city represents this need to be around people and the need in a busy place, but then there is a contradiction with me, because I am constantly looking for a place to be alone. I wanted to show this with the huge tree which is the main theme representing the constant need to be alone. My avatar is sat down looking over at the city this is to show what the city represents to me as the busy place. To design the area and Avatar I had to use 3D Studio Max this is a 3D modelling software, I found it really hard to make any progress at the start of the project I found it to be a big learning curve, but after I learnt the basic I felt comfortable to produce my Avatar. I think if I had more experience with the software I could of done more to the area and made it look a lot more professional.

The movie is going to have a sound track of a busy city and birds singing. I thinks this puts across the idea of the busy to city to the viewer even though I have not modelled cars or people the audio will allow the viewer to know they seeing a busy city.

I started my research in an online 3D community to gain an insight what it is like to have an avatar I maybe change your Identity and in a way become some else. I kept a diary that followed my Avatar progress with the virtual world. I food the experience to be both interesting and little boring because of he fact that there was not much to do on the online community that I was on, I don’t think I would go back on this particular one again. As another form of research, I looked in to the work of Russ Mills an Illustrator. I especially like his work form 2006-2007 because he did portraits of people and edited them on the computer to get his finished result his work at this period consisted of just people’s faces.

I feel this was a successful project and that if was to do it again I would like to charge a few features and maybe do some more tutorials and some animation in the video. But due to the time constraints of the project I was limited to what I could do but I am happy with the final movie, I feel I am ready for the next project and feel my ideas reflect the ideas from this project.

I tried to enter the community of Second life but found I could not enter the community or even get an account from them so I found a different online community call Vside. This is a small online community. There are only three average sized maps to explore.

I found my experiences in Vside to be at time to be a bit boring I started getting a little bored with doing the same things I did not like the idea of socialising on a computer with people I do not know I preferred to socialise with people I know. The first two weeks were ok they were more about discovering what was it all about and why people create a new identity. At first I got a little addicted to the online community. I think it’s been more of a novelty of meeting and talking to people you haven’t met and are in a different country. I noticed that it never really gets busy until late at night I found most of the events I went to, this could be because the creators of this online community are based in America and so the majority of the people that go on this community are American and the events that I went to. It was three in total they were at 4 o’clock in the morning. I only did this to experience what it would be like to visit these events.

In Vside I also heard that there were quite a lot of secrets to find in Vside. I was fun finding these secrets I meant that I had to make more friends so I find these secrets within the online community. Managed to make around more than 100 friends, in the community there is an incentive to making more friends because you earn points called “Respekt” points the more you have you are able to access new areas such as VIP rooms or buy items of clothes that are made available by getting more points. I did actually make friends with someone that I spoke to on a number of occasion’s jus to catch up. They were one of the people who invited me to the event that took place one event was quite tricky to find. I had to find my way to a hidden basketball court. It took a while to find. The party was at 4 am so I decided to look for it before the party I did not want to be looking for something so early in the morning.

I would say my experiences in Vside to be quite exciting but as the time went on and I done majority of the things you could do on Vside. I got a little bored especially when the project work got more demanding I got less and less to enthusiastic about visiting the community. I think I might go on it again from time to time but I don’t think I could get addicted.

Vside Day 8
Today on Vside I decide to go on it in the morning to see of it is actually in use because the majority of users are American I wanted to see if any one was actually on it so I visited all three areas and the main area New Vencia still had people playing from America I could believe how thy could do this I would have been around 4 in the morning in some states. Started to ask people what time it was where they were. I didn’t get a reply from some. I think they might of Thought I was some weird person.

I signed in at the forums on the Website to see if there were things I was missing out on any secrets. I stumble across an article about a secret bot that appears in different location in the world. So I went in search for these bots. And found on the train track hidden away at the graphic boundaries of the section of New Vencia. He kept asking whether I preferred sushi or burritos. I answered and he said something about a red Bunny that will give you secret. So im in search of a Red bunny.

I went on Vside today to meet a friend from back that had joined so we could chat. If seemed weird and it sunk in that these are real people playing this as well as me. We chatted for quite a long. It free and we didn’t have use the Phone. I guess this is a good advantage over a regular chat room I that the game is interactive a that there are things to do.

I met someone from the UK. I think this was the first person that I have as a friend from the UK on Vside. They were from Cornwall. They were on quite late at night I think they were on so late because most people are on and it is busy very late

I thought I would catch up with a person I met in the first few days. It just felt weird that I was actually speaking to someone I didn’t actually know. She was telling me she as the new Mac book air. We started chatting about the iphone and how unnecessary it is. She decided to invite me to a special meeting in a secret area. I didn’t go because it was at 4am our time and decided it would be ridiculous to stay awake that late just to stay on this game.

I went to an area that I haven’t really visited much because you don’t get many people visiting it so there is no one to talk to La GenoaAires. Its as a latin feel to the area. I decided to fully explore the area. I found a nightclub there and there was a few people in the club. So I started to talk to them.

Today I again decide to go to another area this one is called Raijuku. There weren’t many people to talk to. So I did a little exploring and found some secrets in this area which which improved my status level.

Feel at bit weird that that I am speaking to people that I don’t know. When I could be socialising with my friends instead of stuck in on my computer.
I just feel the novelty of it as worn off. I just decided today to see if there were any people that I know are on.

Day 2

I started to make friends from al over the world. I managed to find one person from the UK. I have noticed that most of my Friends are from the US I think this must be because Vside was created in america and so it was favoured more by americans. I did not manage to much on this visit to the Vside

Day 3

I took a day off form going on Vside.

Day 4

I made a discovery from one of my friends they told me that if you follow the Rabbits on the walls they will lead to secrets. So I started looking for Rabbits on the walls. I found that there was a Rabbit on a wall near a shop I was looking in. I asked someone how do you find the secret near the Rabbit. They told me that you had to jump in to the wall. I did this and I was tele-ported to a new part of Vside. these are the screenshot of this.

This bunny on the bottom left of the screen takes you to the roof above where a bunny make you jump really high.

Vside Day 5

I was invited to special event near a secret Basket Ball court. the only problem I was at half 2 am so I decided to stay up and see what t was like. There were quite a few people there so I decide to chat to them.

I decided to take 2 days away from Vside because I had to work at weekend so could not find the time to visit.

Vside Day one

I entered the virtual world with alias as Monkeyd, I explored the 3 different section of the world. I was quite quiet to begin with but it started to get a bit busier. I have made 6 friends already they are all from America. I had a dance with a girl in Club and she swithed her clothes to a bikini it made me laugh because it made realise that people that this sort of thing serious. They actually asked how do I look. I did not know what to say. Its a virtual women.

When I first read that I needed to create a second identity. I did not have a clue what I would need to do. So I looked at Second life and tried to get a account with it and I was not able to they did not send me a confirmation email so it was impossible for me to set up an account with them. I thought I was not going to be able to do the project. My lecturer told me that there were other online communities. So I decide to join Vside. This is a relatively new but free online community by doppelganger. The Characters are all cell shaded giving it a cartoon look to it. There are 3 towns to visit. Its quite a small online community. then again that could be a good thing because if you lose a friend you can find them easily. You can also teleport to your friends if you want to speak to them.

On this society you can purchase a credits which are a sort of currency that can be used on the game to purchase new clothes for you character. I don't think that will be something that will be something that I will be doing. I have heard that people spend a lot of money on these virtual world especially second life where you can opt to pay £9 a month so you can buy land and clothes or set up a business.

Im going to keep a day to day diary of the goings on and the interaction of my character with other members within the world of Vside.

This image I have commented on before I thought I was appropriate to use because of the use of bright contrasting colours used on it and the use of think black outline really adds to the flatness of the colour.

NEW TERM, NEW MODULE-IDENTITIES

We have started our new term and our new module. I found review week to be very positive and helpful, I have set my self some new aims for the term. I am considering producing an online portfolio I am thinking of using flash to produce it. so this would mean that I should looking at books on flash for help on action script. I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Flash Project Part 5

The project is finished and all I need to do is hand in my work. The Flash project was a big learning curve as I have never used flash before and so having to learn how to use was a daunting task.

For the project I came up with the idea of creating a character called cliff. He is a student that is confused on what he should do with his life at university. So it is down to the user to decide what they should do with him and what path they should take as a student. I had a few problems when it when it came to implementation because of the loops I wanted to make within the project. I feel that it went quite successful and that the loops and buttons I used work the way they should. I think that I had spent a few more hours on it I think I could of made it betters because I noticed some mistakes before I had to hand it in. I feel next time I do a project I will make sure I spend a little more time making sure there no mistakes.

Composition Analysis

We were asked to by our lecturer to go visit a local art gallery. So I decide at the time I was back home in Manchester so I decided visit a Manchester Art Gallery. They wanted us t go see a Piece of work that really stand out and analysis the composition off within the frame. I decided to analysis a piece of work buy a artist called Michael-Craig Martin the piece is called Yellow, It is from his collection Inhale/Exhale. I have seen this piece before and I really liked the layout on the painting. Michael-Craig Martin was born in Ireland; Craig-Martin grew up and was educated in the USA, studying Fine Art at Yale University. He moved to Britain on completion of his studies in 1966.*

The painting itself consists of everyday household objects. But there is something wrong with the composition of the painting. It appears the scale of each object is wrong and not realistic. This style follows Naïve art because of the use of bright colours and the fact there is no reason behind the objects being miss proportioned. It is clearly evident that the composition consists of mismatched objects of wrong sizes, such as the light bulb and pencil sharpener are larger that the chair which in really life would be seen as absurd.

Another thing in this painting that is not realistic is the perspective of each object is different and that they are all learning at different angles for example the pencil sharpener is learning forward so you can see the detail on the top and Metronome is learning back. Its appears Craig Martin as done this so that each abject is show most of is detail in the rather than hidden away, this is evident with the two draws in the background of the image are leant forward so the viewer an see the detail within the frame. Also the use of flat colour and the think black line of the image add to the flatness of the composition even though there is lines giving the object dimension because the colour is flat and no shades of the same colour the image still appears flat.

I fell the way the composition is set out is successful and Michael-Craig Martin cleverly presents each object within frame so the viewer asks and wonders whats different about this piece.

Flash Project Part 4 Implementation

Before I could really start my Project I had to do some testing which meant I had to test where the buttons go and what frames they take you to. Because I want my movie to have three different strands that means I had to make 3 new endings so which it meant that I had to learn the sequence of each button and decide which loops take you where.

After testing I had to get the images to put into the time-line. These took the longest of the implementation of the movie. I wanted to the make the movie really interactive like not only the buttons where interactive but also certain parts of the frame like scrolling over cliff and speech bubbles appear creating these as buttons took the longest as I had to keep test these to see if they worked.

Flash Project Part 3 Ideas

This was tricky trying to come up with a story for this narrative project. It was harder as I had to think for myself and not have help from team members.

I started to doodle and write ideas down. Then I came up with a image of a person called cliff I then decided to turn this character into a Student from Nottingham Trent. I really like the idea that the audience could decide where to take the Character in the movie and that they had the control over the path they should take throughout the sequence. I came up with the idea of there being three main choices in student life; going to university to study, going to the pub or to stay in bed and sleep.

I thought this was a good idea as students could bring there own experiences as a student to the movie and they can decide what type of student they wanted cliff to be.

Flash Project 2 Learning How to use Flash

We were told we had to learn the basics of flash and get to grips with the layout. So I opened it n tried to use it without success, I though I use the online tutorials and these we know help because I find it hard to learn from something that I just being shown to me. The person on the tutorials goes to fast for you to get the gist of what they doing so I prefer to learn as I go along. I prefer to do this because I am learning as I am doing my project. The only problem with this is that you make lots of mistakes until you know what you are doing. but I prefer this and I learn fast from my mistakes. I feel after just playing around with the template that our lecturer gave us. allowed me to learn and enhance my skills using the Adobe creative suite package.

Flash Project 1

We have been set knew project that involves us using Adobe Flash. The project needs to be interactive which means the audience can choose what they want to do with the video and where to take it. In the seminar we had to look at a number of websites that was interactive. I practically like the one from the

Gorillaz it is the website that is used as a marketing tool to sell the merchandise. This whole site is asset out like a game with mini games the whole site is interactive and you almost interact with everything. It is like a journey to find items to enter the shop to buy the merchandise. The audience has a choice to whether they want to go through the website playing the games or just go straight to the shop. I liked the way when you scroll over certain object and they animate or text appears over it.
